The West Virginia Internet Exchange (WVIX) was founded in 2023 as the state's first internet exchange point (IXP) to enhance regional internet performance and reliability. Located in the Heart of West Virginia, WVIX serves as a hub where internet service providers (ISPs), data centers, and content providers can directly exchange traffic. By keeping internet traffic local, the exchange reduces latency, improves speeds, and lowers costs by bypassing third-party transit providers. This initiative is particularly significant for West Virginia, which has long struggled with broadband access and affordability issues. WVIX offers port speeds ranging from 1Gbit to 40Gbit via single-mode fiber at no charge, making it accessible to a wide range of participants
WVIX was established as a nonprofit organization with the goal of strengthening the region’s digital infrastructure and supporting economic development. As a nonprofit, it does not charge membership or port fees but encourages donations in the form of colocation space, equipment, or transport to help expand the fabric. The initiative aims to increase reliability, promote local economic growth, and improve internet access for residents and businesses in West Virginia and neighboring states. The nonprofit model ensures that WVIX operates with the community's best interests in mind, prioritizing accessibility and efficiency rather than profit.
