The West Virginia Internet Exchange (WVIX), established in 2023, is the state's first internet exchange (IX) and operates as a nonprofit organization. An internet exchange is a physical switch where networks, such as ISPs, data centers, and content providers, connect directly to exchange traffic, improving speed and reducing costs and decreasing latency by avoiding third-party transit providers. As a nonprofit, WVIX is dedicated to enhancing internet performance in West Virginia and neighboring states by keeping traffic local, reducing latency, increasing reliability, and supporting the region’s digital infrastructure and economic growth.
WVIX membership and port costs are free of charge to all members, however we do ask that if you can support the project by donating colocation space, equipment or transport to help the fabric grow and to better support the internet ecosystem as a whole.
